On Monday I read a piece in The Lawyer about the encouraging recent trainee retention rates posted by the big law firms. Yesterday the same title reported that Olswang had retained just 64% of its trainees. This followed the recent news that Wragge & Co and Mayer Brown had offered their future trainees sums of money to defer their TCs. Meanwhile, the Association of Graduate Recruiters has forecast that graduate vacancies in law will plunge by 16.5% this year. How to make sense of all these mixed messages?
