What happened when a panel of five star lawyers — including Herbert Smith Freehills solicitor-advocate Matthew Weiniger QC, BPP Law School BPTC chief James Welsh, magic circle silk Claire Blanchard QC, Hardwicke rising star commercial barrister Charles Raffin and top criminal lawyer Mukul Chawla QC — were grilled on the future of advocacy by an audience of 90 law students at Gray’s Inn last Tuesday?

Cajoled by Legal Cheek managing editor Alex Aldridge — who reckons that the Inns of Court should be returned to their original function of housing rookie lawyers on the cheap, which would enable them to practise as legal aid lawyers on post-Grayling rates before joining City law firms later in their careers — the lawyers of the future gave the panel a good going over in a lively discussion.

Grab some popcorn, sit back and enjoy.
