Lawyer was fired late last year after foul-mouthed football rant that swept YouTube
A Chelsea-mad City lawyer who was sacked after branding Liverpool FC fans as “scouse scum” during a hot-tempered YouTube interview has landed a new job at London law firm McCarthy Denning.
Clive O’Connell — a former partner in the London office of New York-based law firm Goldberg Segalla — got the boot after his appearance on online football channel Neeks Sports.
In the wake of Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool last October, the insurance specialist launched into a foul-mouthed tirade, referring to Liverpool FC fans as “scum scouse idiots” and “nasty horrible people”. The video has since been watched almost 300,000 times.
To make matters worse, Goldberg Segalla’s senior partner, Rick Cohen — opting to inject a sense of irony into the situation — took to YouTube, just six days later, to reveal that O’Connell had been dismissed.
Putting the events of 2015 behind him, it would now appear that O’Connell is back in business, having landed the role at McCarthy Denning (Which is far as Legal Cheek is aware has no connection to the late Lord Denning, having only been founded in 2013).
The firm, based just off Chancery Lane, covers a wide range of practice areas including O’Connell’s specialisms of insurance and reinsurance.
According to O’Connell’s LinkedIn, he joined in December 2015. With the original video hitting the headlines in early November, it appears the former Goldberg Segalla lawyer took only a few weeks to bag his new role.
A quick check on the Law Society database reveals McCarthy Denning to have just 19 solicitors across two offices, in comparison to Goldberg Segalla’s 265 lawyers across 17 offices. O’Connell was a partner for almost four years at Goldberg.
The top lawyer, who also spent time at Clyde & Co legacy firm Barlow Lyde & Gilbert earlier in his career, wasn’t completely down during his month-long hiatus, maintaining a non-executive position at London asset management firm Twelve Capital AG.
O’Connell’s shiny new firm profile reveals that he is one of the “50 most influential people in the world of insurance” and trumpets his love of… cycling.
No mention of Chelsea FC then?
