AUNTIE EM’S HOMESPUN ADVICE FOR LAWYERS

Dear Auntie Em,

I’m a male first year trainee solicitor at a large law firm in the City of London. My problem is that I really fancy (and possibly even may be in love with) one of my fellow trainees. We’re mates, and I know she’s single too. Ordinarily, I’d ask her out. But I don’t want to do anything that could damage my chances of  getting taken on after I finish my training contract. What should I do?

Best regards,

Oli

Disclaimer: Auntie Em has never worked in a law firm. But she is an aunt and has a psychology degree. As a teenager, Auntie Em had a dream predicting 9/11.

Dear Oli,

I’ve never been to a law firm, so let’s take this into a completely new context – a canteen, for example.

Now, suppose you worked in a canteen and there was another canteen worker you were attracted to. Consider:

1. How much you like this canteen worker;

2. Whether or not there is an offical policy forbidding relationships between canteen staff.

If there’s no policy, and you really do like her very much, simply offer her some extra whipped cream on her Friday trifle.

However, if there is a policy, you must examine your respect for rules – which, of course, will require you to explore your commitment to the law itself. As you do this, keep in mind whether or not this lass is a fire sign.

Problem solved!

Lots of love,

Auntie Em xxx
