BPP law student charged with murder appears in court — but does not enter plea

GDL student’s next hearing scheduled for March

A law student and self-proclaimed law firm boss has failed to enter a plea after he was charged with the murder of a young schoolteacher.

Carl Langdell, a current Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) student at BPP Law School, is suspected of killing 23 year-old Katie Locke at the Theobalds Park luxury hotel on 23 December 2015.

Langdell — who obtained a 2:1 in Business Management from Cardiff University before making the switch to law — was charged with the 23 year-old Londoner’s murder on Christmas Day.

Unusually for a 26 year-old law student, Langdell’s LinkedIn page reveals that he owns his own law practice, Langdell Legal Associates. His professional profile also suggests that he had plans to embark on the Bar Professional Course (BPTC) at BPP once he had completed his GDL.

Langdell’s case kicked off at St Albans Crown Court on Friday. It was heard by Judge Andrew Bright QC, with Langdell appearing via video link from Bedford prison.

However, when Legal Cheek contacted the court directly, it was revealed that Langdell had failed to enter a plea. Psychiatric reports are being prepared by the defence, and must be submitted by 26 February.

It was confirmed that Langdell has been remanded in custody, pending a plea and case management hearing scheduled for 18 March. Legal Cheek understands this will also be conducted via videolink.
