Trowers & Hamlins reveals autumn retention rate of 79%

Seasonal fluctuations continue to affect national firm

City outfit Trowers & Hamlins has revealed 11 out of 14 of its autumn 2016 newly qualifying (NQ) lawyers have committed their future to the firm.

Offering around 23 training contracts annually, the national firm — with a strong Middle East presence — posted a 79% autumn figure with all but three trainees opting to stick around.

The 11 new Trowers’ recruits — who will walk away with around £62,000 each — will be scattered across eight of the firm’s key practice areas. These are corporate, commercial property, private wealth, international construction, property litigation, housing regeneration, residential property and international energy and resources.

The firm’s City office will receive the lion’s share of the new legal talent with nine new lawyers. Meanwhile, Trowers’ Exeter and Oman outposts will each be gaining one new fresh-faced associate.

Trowers’ training partner Tonia Secker said:

We would like to congratulate our outstanding trainees on becoming qualified solicitors. They’ve all worked extremely hard over the last two years, and we’re delighted to offer them permanent roles so they can begin and develop their legal careers here at Trowers & Hamlins.

Last autumn the firm could only muster a retention score of 71% with just five trainees, from a cohort of seven, staying on post qualification.

This was followed by a more positive spring 2016 result. On this occasion, the firm held on to six of its seven NQs. However, at the time, Trowers’ revealed that a further trainee had qualified early due to his previous experience, resulting in a final retention figure of 88%.
