I am about to start my training contract at a commercial firm, but I really want to be a family lawyer

Can I change career paths later on?

In the latest instalment in our Career Conundrums series, one aspiring family lawyer is concerned that her training contract at a large commercial firm will pigeonhole her for life.

“I am starting a training contract at a very large commercial firm soon, and I was incredibly lucky to get the contract. I think it is the best chance for me to get a really good training and qualify as a solicitor, but at the same time I am unsure if I see myself interested in commercial law for any length of time. Where my heart really lies is child protection and family law, but training contracts in this area are next to impossible to find. If I do my training in a commercial firm, do I have to stay in that sort of law forever or is there any hope of me being able to make a change later on?”
