Lawyer Files a Cartoon To Get Round Five-Page Limit

After having the length of his brief limited to five pages by a judge, New York lawyer Bob Kohn decided to use a “graphic novelette” (a small part of which is pictured below) in order to convey his arguments in full.

The full cartoon, filed on Tuesday as part of a price-fixing case brought against several publishers of e-books by the US Justice Department, is here.

The disappointing bit is that the cartoon wasn’t drawn by Kohn himself (although he did write the captions). The artist is Harvard film studies student Julia Alekseyeva, a friend of Kohn’s daughter, Katie.

Kohn told Bloomberg: “I’m hopeful I can have an impact on the court’s thinking in a positive way.”
