Downton Abbey characters’ horror at Inns of Court poverty

No, the Dowager Countess of Grantham and Isobel Crawley weren’t doing a mini-pupillage at a legal aid set

Fans of Downton Abbey with an interest in the law will have noted that the Temple area of London has provided the backdrop for some of the London-based scenes in recent weeks.

In Sunday evening’s episode, the Dowager Countess of Grantham and Isobel Crawley were seen walking across Temple Lane.

Bearing east, they then cut through to Temple Church.

Inside they found, unexpectedly, a soup kitchen. “Oh Isobel, I didn’t think it would be like this,” says the Countess. “No neither did I,” responds Isobel.

Anyone who has done a mini-pupillage at a legal aid set will know the feeling.

Next week on Downton: the Dowager Countess and Isobel desperately fire-off last minute applications for winter vac schemes at City law firms?
