“Who are ya!? Who are ya!?” — Intellectual property infringement leads to drastic action

Romanian side Steaua Bucharest were simply referred to as “the hosts” (“gazde” in Romanian) during their game at the weekend having lost a legal battle over the use of their name and badge.

The club — which is the most heavily supported in Romania — used to be part of the Romanian Army’s sports club and broke away in 1994 having secured private investment.

But the Romanian Ministry of Defence brought court action against Steaua in 2011, claiming use of their intellectual property without consent. The court ruled in the Ministry’s favour on Wednesday — resulting in drastic action having to be taken before the club played a domestic league game against CSMS Iasi yesterday.
