Popcorn: also works well in law lectures

oxford--hsf

Having arrived early in Oxford for today’s ‘Demystifying Law in the City’ lecture, with author Chris Stoakes and international law firm Hogan Lovells, I popped in to the university’s law faculty. There I was immediately handed a bag of popcorn.

Scoffing cinema snacks isn’t standard lecture practice in Britain’s foremost seat of legal learning, it turns out. No, the popcorn — and accompanying fancy dress — is part of Herbert Smith Freehills’ #hsfpopuponcampus Twitter campaign to lure the nation’s best wannabe lawyers.

The global mega firm — which today announced a 93% trainee retention rate for its spring qualifiers — was also in Cardiff today, having last week showered students of various London universities in popcorn, fancy dress paraphernalia and £100 Amazon vouchers.

Giveaways and 90% plus trainee retention rates: all very 2006. The corporate legal graduate recruitment market looks to have found its feet again.
