‘This is the most stressful day in my life since I took the bar exam’

A lawyer has inadvertently taken the internet by storm after his daughter’s hamster went missing on his watch.

Taking to Twitter earlier this week, US college student Stephanie Veerman posted a string of screenshots purporting to show a panic-filled conversation between her and her lawyer father.

“My dad took over my hamster once I went back to college and ended up getting really attached and today he escaped,” Veerman wrote. “And this goes to prove how truly pure my father is.”

The conversation kicks off (see tweets below) with Veerman’s extremely apologetic father explaining that her pet hamster, Chester, has gone missing. Despite reassurances from Veerman that everything will be ok, her father insists the rodent’s runabout is “the absolute worst” and that he’ll even take the day off work to look for him.

Responding to her dad’s somewhat extreme reaction, Veerman texts: “Dad – he’s just a hamster I don’t blame you at ALL. you shouldn’t skip work you are a lawyer and he is a hamster”.

The panic-stricken lawyer decides to place a ring of flour around a tiny bowl of food in a bid to coax Chester back into his hamster home. The flour is “so I can see his footsteps”, the lawyer explains. “So I know he’s still alive”.

Continuing to apologise, the hamster-loving-lawyer writes: “I’m so sorry Steph. This is my biggest screwup ever. I will make it right… God is good, I will trust him. I know he likes peanut butter.”

Then 12 hours later, Chester finally makes an appearance — much to the delight of Veerman. But where has he been this whole time? “In his cage… Are you effing kidding me”, the lawyer writes. “This is the most stressful day in my life since I took the bar exam”.

Veerman’s post went down a storm on Twitter, racking up over 100,000 retweets and 400,000 likes. “’You are a lawyer and he is a hamster’ sent me”, one user quipped, while another wrote: “If that hamster ever murders anyone, he’s screwed. On the other hand, he knows a lawyer.”
