Campus Director of The University of Law, Aruna Verma, shares her top tips and strategies for nailing firm research

At a recent workshop hosted by The University of Law’s Moorgate Campus Director, Aruna Verma, attendees picked up practical advice on how to approach, organise and make the most of their firm research. Drawing on her experience supporting thousands of aspiring solicitors, Aruna shared her tried-and-tested strategies for standing out in a competitive job market.

As Aruna explained, good research doesn’t just help you impress firms — it also helps you figure out whether a firm is the right fit for you. Understanding a firm’s culture, work and values shows genuine interest, while giving you the chance to see if its environment and opportunities match your own goals.

She encouraged students to go beyond the basics and ask thoughtful questions. What does the training contract structure look like? Are there secondment opportunities? Are there plenty of opportunities for career development? Which practice areas or sectors does the firm focus on?

The workshop also highlighted a range of research sources for students to draw on — from legal directory rankings and firm websites to social media and legal news outlets. Her advice? Use a mix of sources to build a clear, well-rounded picture of each firm and find the one that best matches your career aspirations.
