Usain Bolt may be underwhelmed by the Commonwealth Games — the 100-meters Olympic champion and world record-holder yesterday described the Glasgow event as “a bit shit” — but at least one solicitor is having the time of his life.

Richard Yates — a one-year-qualified commercial litigation specialist at Manchester-based firm Farleys — will be the only home nations runner in the final of the 400m hurdles. He went through as the fastest loser in a time of 49.80 in heats that saw Wales’s favourite son, Dai Greene, fail to qualify.

Yates followed a law degree from Leeds University in 2007 with the legal practice course at Manchester Metropolitan University and then training and qualification at Farleys. He won a Commonwealth bronze medal in the 4×400m relay in 2010 and is also the current English Champion over the 400m hurdles.
