Encouraging figures released by White & Case and Osborne Clarke
The London office of US firm White & Case is keeping on 100% of its trainees who qualify this spring, while Osborne Clarke will hang on to 89%.
For the former that means 13 out of 13 new qualifiers staying with the firm, where the newly qualified (NQ) salary is a hefty £72,000.
Mid-tier outfit Osborne Clarke, meanwhile, keeps eight out of nine of its rookies. Three of those will be based in the firm’s London office, where NQ pay is £60,000. The other five will be split between Bristol and Reading, and earn £40,000.
The strong retention performance of White & Case — which takes on 30 trainees each year — comes on the back of good 2014 numbers.
Osborne Clarke’s retention has been less stable, yo-yoing to as low as 67% last autumn. The firm takes on 20 trainees each year.
Earlier this month Trowers & Hamlins became the first firm to reveal its spring 2015 retention rate, announcing that it is keeping on 82% — or nine out of 11 — of its new-qualifiers.
