Aspiring barristers take note
The Bar Council has confirmed the key dates for aspiring barristers wishing to apply for pupillage in the upcoming cycle through the Pupillage Gateway, the centralised system for applications.
Applications can be submitted from 4 January 2027 at 11am, and applicants will have a little over three weeks to do so before the window closes on Thursday 28 January 2027 at 11:59pm.
Advertisements through the Gateway will be viewable from Friday 20 November 2026 at midday, but applicants will be unable to submit until the New Year.
All pupillage vacancies must be advertised through the Gateway, but some sets administer their recruitment separately.
Prospective applicants can begin setting up their accounts in less than a month’s time, from Monday 7 September, and upload their academic and work experience history, as well as giving their referees.
After the application window has closed, chambers have from 1 February 2027 to start shortlisting for interviews, which will take place over the following months. Offers will be made on 7 May 2027 from 9:30am, and will stay open for offerees to accept or decline until 14 May 2027. You can find out more here.
