Tuesday 23 May, 4pm to 6pm, taking place virtually

Legal Cheek’s latest virtual event is for prospective career changers looking to enter the legal sphere from other industries.

Taking place in partnership with The University of Law (ULaw) on Tuesday 23 May 2023 from 4pm to 6pm, ‘How to get into law as a career changer’ features speakers from Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, Pinsent Masons, Tanfield Chambers and ULaw. The speakers, who have all come to the law after working in another sector, will be joined by a ULaw careers expert. The session will be chaired by a Legal Cheek journalist.

Date: Tuesday 23 May 2023
Time: 4pm to 6pm
Location: Virtual event
Level: Graduates, Career Changers

The speakers will answer audience questions in a Question Time-style panel discussion running from 4pm to 5pm. They will share the secrets to their own success, while advising attendees on how they can best position themselves to obtain a training contract or pupillage. They will also look to the future and give their views on what changes we can expect in the legal market.

The speakers

Maite Aguirre Quiñonero, trainee solicitor sitting in tax advice & controversy at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, who formerly worked in the music industry as a concert pianist, conductor and music teacher
James Callender, fourth seat trainee solicitor sitting in construction advisory and disputes at Pinsent Masons, who formerly worked in the insurance sector, including as an underwriter, account manager and producer
Christopher Maynard, specialist property and commercial barrister at Tanfield Chambers, who formerly worked as a labourer, HGV driver, chauffeur and office manager
Anne Robertson, programme & student lead at ULaw’s Leeds campus, who was formerly a qualified nurse before qualifying as a family lawyer and later a clinical negligence solicitor

Afterwards there will be a virtual mini law fair with the speakers, current trainees and pupils, members of the graduate and pupillage recruitment teams from the firms, as well as ULaw’s employability team.

Apply to attend. You’ll be asked to submit two questions for the speakers.

Please note that this event is open to aspiring lawyers who hope to join the profession after previous careers in other industries.
