Legal pic of the day

“The courtroom dive”

This classic “courtroom dive” footage first surfaced in the early days of YouTube. Since then it has been turned into a Vine and has been doing the rounds on Twitter of late.

What most of the people who tweet it fail to realise is that the professional footballer-style collapse occurred not in a courtroom but in a council meeting.

During the session in Carson, California, ex-local mayor Vera Robles DeWitt is seen clipping city commissioner Jan Schaefer on the back of the head with a handful of papers — Schaefer then goes down like a ton of bricks.

Footage of the incident, which took place in 2007, promptly went viral.

Having been charged with battery, DeWitt eventually reached a settlement that avoided criminal proceedings — although as part of the deal she had to pay $1,500 in restitution costs, take 52 hours of anger management classes and participate in 100 hours of community service.
