Jacob Lewis initially dropped out of education at just 17 and headed for a three-year stint in the shadily described field of “debt management”.

However, through sheer determination the 22-year-old from Cardiff has turned his life around by returning to school as a mature student and ultimately securing a place studying law at what is arguably one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Lewis — who crashed on various friend’s sofas when a family feud prevented him from returning home during his time at college — bagged four A*s yesterday, after giving education another bash.

The soon-to-be Cambridge law student — who studied at Coleg y Cymoedd in Merthyr Tydfil — secured perfect 100% marks in both history and law.

The secret to his success appears to be sheer hard work, spending much of his time at in the college library. Speaking to web-based newspaper Wales Online, Lewis revealed the full extent of his hard work:

My daily commute to college was around 45 minutes and I spent 12 hours a day in the college library as it was the only place I could study.

Lewis was keen to praise the staff at the college, claiming his success would not have been possible without them. The newbie law student said they helped with financial support through the college’s student hardship fund, even going as far as putting him up in a hotel on occasions when he had nowhere else to go.

He told Wales Online:

I’m so incredibly grateful to the college for all they did for me. It’s been a trying time but it has been worth it.

And as for career prospects, the 22 year old continued:

I have a sincere commitment to try and make the world a better place
