Unbelievably high-achieving wannabe solicitor racks up another top extra-curricular achievement for his CV
A law student-led Oxford University a cappella group has hit headlines once again, raking in almost 130,000 views on YouTube with a classic Eartha Kitt Christmas cover.
All-male singing sensations ‘Out of the Blue’, whose rendition of Shakira’s ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ gained widespread media coverage last summer, have released the follow up track just in time for Christmas.
Taking Eartha Kitt’s 1953 hit ‘Santa Baby’ the musical troupe — headed by Oxford law student Deon Fang (pictured) — has released its own unique take of the 50s classic for charity.
Fang, 22, and originally from Singapore, has been the group’s “manager” for the past four months and is currently in his second year of a BA in Jurisprudence.
Having already squeezed in a vacation schemes at magic circle outfit Linklaters, international giant Baker & McKenzie and Singapore’s Allen & Gledhill, Fang has somehow found time to rally his team of singers to help local charity Helen & Douglas House. The children’s hospice, based in Oxford, cares for children and young adults with life-limiting illnesses.
With its previous Shakira cover raising almost £10,000 for charity, the group — predominately made up Oxford University students alongside a couple from Brookes — hope this latest track, which has already gained 128,000 views, will be an even greater success.
Sergeant Fang — yes he even did a two-year stint in the Singapore Armed Forces — is joined by the rest of the group, including fellow law student Jasper Gold, as they dance and sing their way around Oxford’s historic Bodleian library.
Maintaining appearances, the polished-looking video features the young students wearing smart blue suits, with a couple of the singers opting for a more seasonal christmas jumpers.
Fang, who now goes by the name ‘Deyoncé Fang’ on Out of the Blue’s official website, said:
After the success of ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ and ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, ‘Santa Baby’ is perfect for us because we don’t take ourselves too seriously, but do cherish the opportunity to raise thousands for charity while putting our own spin on the timeless classic, following in the footsteps of everyone from Mariah to Shakira, RuPaul to Bublé.
Having accumulated more scholarships and prizes than Legal Cheek has had hot dinners, Fang has clearly not let the rigours of managing an international boy bad affect his chances of becoming a lawyer.
Taking home the top scores in criminal law, constitutional law and law moderations this year, the motivated young law student will no doubt have his eyes set on Christmas number one.
