Legal Cheek is partnering with Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) to hold an event discussing developments in commercial litigation and international arbitration that are creating ever more opportunities for solicitor-advocates in global law firms.

On the panel will be members of the firm’s renowned Advocacy Unit — the only one of its kind in the United Kingdom. Led by a solicitor QC who began his career as a trainee at HSF, and staffed by specialist litigators, the Unit operates as a kind of mini-chambers within the firm.

The panellists will consider how opportunities for solicitor-advocates have evolved since the Unit was founded in 2005 by two pioneering former barristers, while reflecting on the development of their own careers and offering advice to the next generation who hope to follow in their footsteps.

Also on the agenda will be a look at what the future holds for dispute resolution, with a combination of technology, new funding models and changes in the political landscape set to usher in some interesting changes in the years ahead.

Attendees will be able to ask the panel questions related to these issues in the Question Time-style discussion. Afterwards there will be drinks and an opportunity to network with the firm’s lawyers and graduate recruitment team in HSF’s London office.

The event — the final one of Legal Cheek’s 2016 programme — takes place on Monday 5 December, with the discussion running from 6-7pm, and the drinks and networking between 7-8:30pm. Fifty free places are up for grabs.

Apply to attend here. You’ll be asked to submit a CV and two questions for the panel. The CVs of those offered places will be passed on to HSF’ graduate recruitment team.

Students of all levels are welcome, but places are limited.
