Timepiece dilemma

In our latest Career Conundrum, a law graduate worries that their pricey watch might make the wrong impression during upcoming vacation schemes.

“Hi LC. Please don’t name me. I inherited a nice watch from my grandfather (a gold and silver Rolex). It’s probably the nicest thing I own and I wear it all the time. I’ve seen quite a few of your conundrums on the do’s and don’ts of vac scheme attire but I don’t think you’ve ever done one on watches/jewellery. Basically I’ve got a couple of vac schemes lined up at City law firms this summer and will they think I am a bit an idiot if I turn up wearing my nice watch. I am keen to make a good impression and have often found the watch to be a good talking point, especially if the lawyers I come into contact with are also watch enthusiasts! Thanks.”

Come to the ‘land, you’ll be welcome as a kindred spirit with that sort of watch. You’ll be in your first Lambo by the end of week 1.

shameless shytan

My mate wears 2 Rolex’s when frequenting the temple and the work keeps piling in

Ashley

What exactly is Lambo? OED has a single citation for that word which refers to some illegality.

Shrewd one

A genii !?

law goblin! to the rescue!

It shouldn’t, but it might. Most people at those things are privileged but pretending not to be. So it may give them some material to use against you.

DHGate TD

As long as it’s not a DHGate Shitter, you’ll be fine. Run it past the autists at r/reptime first.

Cute and Funny LLP

mate i rocked a jason007 nautilus all the way through my TC

Never expected an r/reptime comment on LC. I wore a Geektime Cartier Tank on my Linklaters vacation scheme & the partner loved it.

repontheslopes

did they ask if it was gen and more importantly, did you convert the scheme?

Snob

Thought I wouldn’t run into the term DHGate Shitter here. Hello fellow reddit watch enthusiast.

Snob

Sounds like a classy piece and for even greater impact go for a VC or a Patek. Toss in bin if it is a sub (date or no date) – your print room guys will have those.

If you can’t make up your own mind on this question then I’m afraid to tell you you’re not cut out to be a city solicitor.

Trainee at international firm

Wore a Rolex whilst on secondment to the government…. Wouldn’t recommend doing that. However, if you’re at an international firm, who cares!

Double up

Absolutely fine. Also if you an i-Watch, wear that on the other wrist.

Leave the watch at home. To paraphrase from a MD at Goldman, there isn’t a single person who is going to be rubbed up the wrong way by an intern not having a Rolex; there is a risk that there is one person who will be rubbed up the wrong way by an intern who does. Taking that risk says more about the intern than the watch itself.

DEI Expert

This. Many more senior lawyers will notice and think (or even say) “who the F you think you are”.

JD-Dance

Absolutely NOT. You will definitely come across like an entitled prick.

On vacation avoid the attention
Rolex’s can put you into a dangerous situation as there are thieves watching all wrists and pockets of course 😂

PC Plod

I promise you no one will care but if you go around saying ‘have you seen my watch?’ people will think you’re an ass

It’s already causing you anxiety, so you answered your own question.

Scouser of Counsel

Once had a pupillage interviewee with an expensive watch.

He kept glancing at it and trying to draw attention to it by rolling up his cuff slightly, repeatedly.

It was as if he wanted to draw attention to it in the hope that we would ask him about it.

We didn’t.

He was otherwise at interview and didn’t make the second round.

Think carefully about why you want to wear it.

Manc

Pics or it didn’t happen!

Pragmatist

Commenters, don’t knock the question; as the grad points out, the subject hasn’t been covered and so if you are not already within a law firm to some capacity, the question is entirely fair.

Everybody will form some sort of opinion as soon as they see a Rolex / ‘nice’ looking watch. If you’re not wearing one, you are not providing an opportunity to create a negative impression.

The only circumstance in which I would 100% back wearing a Rolex is to distract from some horrible wart on your wrist or something idk.

VNupe

I agree with an earlier poster, if you feel it’s an issue (and you obviously do), then you should govern yourself accordingly.

No

You’ll look obnoxiously out of touch with reality. Same way you shouldn’t wear Prada shoes, LV belt, etc. Just looks like you’re far too rich and privileged to be capable of functioning in a place where you’ll actually need to work hard.

City lawyer

“Just looks like you’re far too rich and privileged”

Welcome to City law my friend!

The guy that mandates lawyers

Where an AP

Green Lawyer

Cant do that, bruh. 😀

FedUp

you’ll get robbed on the way there

TickTock

The Rolex is not a problem. The fact is it part gold is. Gold watches are naff. They should only be worn by boomers in golf clubs. If I see a client with a gold watch, I always make sure everything is paid in full on account before doing any work.

BarristerOnCircuit

I’ll flow against the tide here. I don’t see an issue with wearing it, providing its not mega flashy (ie. It’s a dress watch, not a sports watch) and you don’t go around deliberately drawing attention to it as others have mentioned.

I wore a dress watch I inherited from my dad throughout applying for pupillage and it gave me quiet confidence and comfort, so there are benefits to it. It could also give the impression you are put together and care about your appearance, which I always valued and think gives a good first impression.

If it is going to cause anxiety and make you self conscious, however, then don’t wear it. It won’t get you through the vac scheme on its own, so consider if it will enhance or detract from the way you can perform or present yourself.

Matthew

send it to me and I will authenticate it for you and return it to you in due course.

Chris

Google Rolex robbery, Colmore Row Birmingham, BBC News. the robbery took place beneath our clerks room video. I live in East Birmingham, a man was murdered for his Rolex at the Heathway Shopping Centre, Shard End. Google that. Your choice.

Chross

I choose not to live or work in Birmingham.

Mr BoJangles

Just drop the Managing Partner an email introducing yourself and asking their opinion on this.

Archibald O'Pomposity

Beyond parody.

Working class Dickies

To be frank, I think people are overthinking this. Rolex is meant to be a reliable workhorse watch that can last a lifetime. Most people buy and/or collect them for that reason, rather than to show off.

I personally wouldn’t give a monkey, and you should wear the watch with pride.
