An amateur baker who studied criminology at university is competing in the Great British Bake Off this year.

Rav Bansal has an undergraduate degree in criminology and a masters degree in criminal justice. However, he chose not to pursue a career in the field and now works at City University London as support staff.

So what else do we know about the 28-year-old baker? Well, he was born in Greenwich, London. He loves vegan baking, and says his family helped him discover his “passion” for cooking. He has volunteered for charities such as Victim Support and is believed to be the first Sikh to appear on the popular BBC show.

Bansal will be competing alongside 11 other cake whizzes, who — over the next few months — will all fight tooth and nail to bag the Bake Off trophy.

Fingers crossed he’ll be taking inspiration from his studies and will wow Paul and Mary with a law-themed cake, examples of which are plenty.
