As it ups LPC maintenance grant by 25%

The London office of US giant Weil Gotshal & Manges has upped newly qualified (NQ) solicitor pay by 4%.

NQs at the New York-headquartered firm’s London office will see their salaries swell from already impressive £115,000 to £120,000, equating to a rise of £5,000. This means Weil’s junior lawyers will enjoy the same levels of cash as their opposite numbers over at fellow US players Sidley Austin, Davis Polk & Wardwell and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. Trainees currently earn a salary of £46,000 in year one, rising to £50,000 in year two.

Pay uplift aside, the megafirm has also increased its Legal Practice Course (LPC) maintenance grant by 25%.

Trainees-to-be at the outfit’s London arm — which offers around 15 training contracts annually — will now receive £10,000 to tide them over during their studies, up £2,000 from the previous award of £8,000.

The 19-office-outfit’s newest recruits complete the vocational course at The University of Law. The firm also fully funds LPC fees.

News of the maintenance grant hike follows a series of similar uplifts.

Legal Cheek’s Firms Most List shows that Sidley Austin currently tops the market with a whopping £11,000 award. Following closely behind is White & Case with an LPC grant of £10,500.

Other firms to have upped their offering to £10,000 include: Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters, Slaughter and May, Allen & Overy, Herbert Smith Freehills, Hogan Lovells, Kirkland & Ellis, Norton Rose Fulbright, Jones Day, Dechert and Mayer Brown.

Market rate is at least 130k. I know some of the firms above cited as paying 120k are paying 135+. Market is about 130-140kish….Also Weil has a lot of problems atm.

More pertinent to young people is trainee salary, where market has shifted to pretty much 50-55k for US firms, but there are still US firms paying 45-50k who beast their trainees 16 hours a day with good finances which could be doing a lot better.
